Background of the Study
Resilience is a critical trait for healthcare professionals, especially for those working in high-pressure and emotionally demanding environments such as emergency departments. Emergency nurses frequently encounter challenging and life-threatening situations, often with limited time and resources, requiring them to make quick decisions and manage patient care under stress. Resilience, defined as the ability to adapt positively to adversity and stress, is essential for nurses to maintain mental well-being, prevent burnout, and deliver quality patient care despite the challenges faced in such environments (Akintoye & Ibrahim, 2023).
Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) is a prominent medical facility that serves as a teaching and referral hospital in Abia State. The hospital's emergency department is often overwhelmed with patients suffering from acute conditions such as trauma, heart attacks, and strokes, making it a high-pressure work environment for the nursing staff. While nurses at ABSUTH are trained to handle such conditions, there is limited research on how their resilience impacts their ability to cope with these stressors and maintain effective performance.
This study aims to evaluate the resilience of emergency nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital and explore how their resilience influences job performance, patient care, and personal well-being in high-pressure work environments. The findings will provide insights into the importance of fostering resilience in emergency nursing practice, suggesting possible interventions for improving nurse retention, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes in high-stress healthcare settings.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Emergency nurses often face immense pressure due to the nature of their work, which requires them to deal with urgent and life-threatening situations on a daily basis. These high-pressure environments can contribute to stress, burnout, and mental health challenges. Resilience plays a crucial role in how nurses cope with these stressors, but there is limited understanding of how resilience affects emergency nurses’ performance and well-being in Nigerian hospitals. Abia State University Teaching Hospital, with its busy emergency department, offers an opportunity to study the resilience of nurses in a real-world, high-pressure setting.
The resilience of emergency nurses is crucial in ensuring that they provide the best possible care under difficult circumstances. However, without appropriate support and interventions, the mental and emotional toll on nurses can lead to reduced job satisfaction, decreased performance, and high turnover rates. This study seeks to explore how emergency nurses at ABSUTH cope with work-related stress, the factors that enhance or hinder their resilience, and the impact resilience has on their overall job performance. By investigating these factors, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for supporting resilience in emergency nursing practice.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the level of resilience among emergency nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the impact of resilience on the job performance and patient care provided by emergency nurses.
3. To identify the factors that contribute to or hinder the development of resilience in emergency nurses.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of resilience among emergency nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital?
2. How does resilience affect the job performance and patient care provided by emergency nurses?
3. What factors contribute to or hinder the development of resilience in emergency nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between the level of resilience and the job performance of emergency nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
2. H₀: Resilience does not significantly affect patient care provided by emergency nurses.
3. H₀: There are no significant factors that influence the development of resilience in emergency nurses.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on emergency nurses at Abia State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include biases in self-reported data and the difficulty of measuring resilience in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, the study may not account for all contextual factors that contribute to resilience.
